Unlocking Leadership: Striving For Great Work

As a leader in both the banking and human service industries, I have gained valuable insights into the importance of not only doing good work but striving for greatness. While good work is necessary to keep our businesses running smoothly and efficiently, it is great work that takes us to the next level.

Great work goes beyond just completing tasks and meeting expectations; it involves envisioning a future state and making small adjustments that save time and money, investing in new technology and people to conquer new markets, and constantly seeking ways to improve and solve problems. It requires a willingness to take risks, experiment with new ideas, and push boundaries in order to achieve success.

In today's ever-changing business landscape, it is essential for all of us to not only maintain a disciplined focus on now, but also to invest time and energy into anticipating and preparing for future challenges and opportunities. This forward-thinking approach involves staying updated with the latest market trends, technology innovations, and regulatory changes and understanding how they can be harnessed or navigated to benefit our businesses. It's about weaving a vision for the future, setting strategic directions, and mobilizing resources to make that future a reality. A great leader is both grounded in the present and attuned to the possibilities of tomorrow. I heard someone recently say that leaders are really paid to deal with ambiguity – and there is often nothing more ambiguous than the future.

Furthermore, great work also involves investing in people. Our success as leaders is not solely based on our individual achievements, but also on the strength and growth of our team. By hiring and developing talented individuals, we build a strong and capable workforce that can drive the organization towards greatness. It is important for each of us to recognize the potential in our employees, provide them with opportunities for growth and development, and empower them to take on new challenges and contribute their unique perspectives.

Until next time, please remember that while good work is necessary for the day-to-day operations of our businesses, great work is what propels business forward towards sustained success. It involves constantly striving for improvement and innovation, anticipating future challenges, and investing in both technology and people. As a leader, it is crucial to not only focus on the present, but also to have a clear vision for the future and take proactive steps towards achieving it. By doing so, we can create truly exceptional organizations that make a positive impact in the world. So, let's all strive for greatness, rather than being content with good work.
